The temperature of the dry food is very important and is the main factor determining how long the dry food will last. The temperature should be between 50 degrees and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but the cooler the better. There is no need to freeze dry food, but if you can keep it on the lower end, around 50 degrees, your food should last longer.

Humidity is another large factor in how long your dry food will last. Having moisture get into your dry food will cause mold, making it go bad quickly. When choosing a container to store your dry foods in, make sure it is airtight so moisture cannot get in it. Furthermore, the more airtight the packaging is, the less oxygen that will be able to get to the food which will also keep it better longer.

Rotate your dry foods on a regular basis and make sure to put dates on all of the containers. While dry foods can be stored for a long time, they do not last forever. Regularly do inventory on what you have, and move the older food towards the front so it is used sooner.

The right containers to store your dried food in, as well as keeping them at the right temperature and away from humidity, can keep your food better for longer periods of time. In addition, make sure to rotate your food on a regular basis so you eat the older ones first. By practicing these measures, you will be able to keep mold and insects away from your food.
